Vote YES on the 2023 Redondo Beach Ballot Measures

This March 7th, 2023 Redondo Beach election has a lot going on which may lead to confusion or simple questions about why there are so many ballot measures.

I endorse ALL 6 ballot measures

Measure CT – This past year, Redondo Beach passed a local ordinance allowing for a maximum of two retail Cannabis locations within the city. We spent a few years working through the compleities of the issue and even faced a recent ballot measure (which lost) that would’ve stripped the city of any local control over this matter. The City is currently creating guidelines for how the two potential entities will be selected and this measure ensures the Redondo Beach General Fund will realize some revenues from the introduction of these locations. This tax will be on the businesses themselves and is not an additional sales tax on customers. I recommend voting YES.

The following 5 ballot measures are specific to the City Charter and cleaning up outdated language or norms enshrined in the document. The first four will allow for greater flexibility in conducting the city’s business and also create efficiencies and improvements. You can read the impartial analysis and arguments in favor here.

Measure CA1 Public Contracting & Purchasing Procedures

Measure CA2 Payment Demands

Measure CA3 Gender Neutral Language

Measure CA4 Contract Approvals & Signatures

Measure CA5 Instant Runoff Elections – As you may remember in 2015, the top two candidates for District 3 did not secure over 50% of the vote in the March election. This created a second runoff election. This process has happened time and again in Redondo and is both time consuming and costly. CA5 changes the Charter to allow for Instant Runoff Elections whereby voters rank the candidates (if more than two.) It grants the City Council the authority to choose which system might be best to conduct an election. At this time, it appears that Ranked Choice Voting is the most commonly used in other cities, counties and states that have also opted for this approach. it will save the city money and hopefully curb negative campaigning. I recommend voting YES.
